Professor Bronstein has an A.B. in biophysics from The Johns Hopkins University (1963) and an LL.B from the University of Maryland (1966). After practicing trial law in Baltimore for several years he decided to go into teaching and received Master of Laws (LL.M., 1971) and Doctor of the Science of Law (S.J.D., 1972) degrees from the University of Michigan. He has been at Michigan State University since April of 1972, teaching in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Medical Schools.

Professor Bronstein is admitted to the bar in both Michigan and Maryland. In the American Bar Association he has served as Chair of the Committee on Environmental Law and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Rules and Procedure; he is currently Vice-Chair of the Committee on Scientific Evidence (1999-2005) and a member of the Environmental Assessment Committee (2004-6).

He is one of the seven founders of the International Association for Impact Assessment and edited its international journal, Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal, from 1993-1999. He is also an ex-officio member of the Council of Section K (Social, Economic and Political Sciences) of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Professor Bronstein is the author of 5 books, 12 monographs and over 40 journal articles and book chapters, and has given innumerable presentations at professional meetings. He has served as a consultant to local, state and federal government agencies, private corporations and international organizations.

Professor Bronstein currently teaches:
