Charles Nelson receives Partner in Conservation Award from the DNR

Michigan State University faculty member Charles Nelson received the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Partners in Conservation Award July 9. Nelson is an associate professor in the Department of Community Sustainability in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR).

Partners in Conservation Awards are given to individuals or organizations for exemplary contributions to conservation in Michigan. Award nominations are made by DNR staff members.

“My career and my passion are devoted to sustainable natural resource management,” Nelson said. “Working with the DNR to assist the Park and Recreation Division, the Wildlife Division and others to provide great outdoor experiences for people today and tomorrow is a joy. I look forward to additional opportunities to do more through my MSU Extension work, teaching, research and volunteerism.”

Nelson’s research focus is on the management, planning and policy of natural resource-based recreation. This involves the integration of knowledge about natural resources, outdoor recreation, facilities, people, planning, policy and management. It also involves effective networking with planners, policymakers, managers and entrepreneurs in an array of natural resource non-profit and commercial venues at the local, state and federal levels.
